Movie: Mere Apne (1971)

Music Director: Salil Choudhary

Singer: Kishore Kumar, Mukesh

Gulzar’s Mere Apne from 1971 dealt with the  disappointment and disillusionment faced by the post-independence generation which came to realize that the long fought freedom hasn’t really materialized into the promised dreams. Instead, they were face to face with many grave problems: rampant youth unemployment, corruption, inflation, poverty, abuse of power by those in power, and a raging war. Gulzar uses heavy sarcasm and satire to underscore the issues of the time, which surprisingly are still relevant today! What also makes this little forgotten song special is, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh singing together.

haalchaal theek thaak hain, sab kuch theek thaak hain;

BA kiya hain, MA kiya, lagata woh bhi anye way kiya;

kaam nahi hain warna yahan, aapki dua se sab theek thaak hain;

haalchaal theek thaak hain, sab kuch theek thaak hain;

aabo hawaa desh ki bahot saaf hain, kaayda hain kanoon hain insaaf hain;

allah miyaan jaane koi jiye ya mare, insaan ko khoon vun sab maaf hain;

aur kya kahoon? choti-moti chori, rishwat khori, deti hain apana guzaara yahan; aapki dua se baaki theek thaak hain;

haal chaal theek thaak hain; sab kuch theek thaak hain;

baazaron ke bhaav mere tau se bade; makanon pe pagadiwaale sasur khade;

buddhi bhook marati nahi zinda hain abhi, koi yeh buzurgon se kaise lade;

aur kya kahoon? roz koi meeting, roz koi bhashan, bhashan pe ration nahi hain yahan; aapki dua se baaki theek thaak hain;

haal chaal theek thaak hain; sab kuch theek thaak hain;

golmol roti ka pahiya chalaa, peeche peeche chandi ka rupaiyya chala;

roti ko bechari ko cheel le gayee, chandi leke mooh kaala kauwaa chalaa;

aur kya kahoon? maut ka tamasha, chala hain betahasha, jeene ki fursat nahi hain yahan; aapki dua se baaki theek thaak hain;

haal chaal theek thaak hain; sab kuch theek thaak hain!
