Movie: Rockford (1999)

Music Director: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Singer: Shankar Mahadevan

This song from a mediocre film by Nagesh Kukunoor had Gulzar’s lyrics woven to the music of the pre-Karan Johar days of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The movie is set in a boarding school and the song is picturized on the main character who is in his early teens. The words are teeming with youthful hope, a frothy optimism and a sense of adventure. The composition is simplistic and compliments the poetry in creating wide open spaces. The first time I heard this song was 12 years ago and today when I am inching towards  my “shaam”, the last line adds a whole new meaning to what’s left of this journey:

shaam ko bhi subah jaisa kya samaa hogaa?

A sharp reminder me that I need to work on making the evening of my journey as hopeful, warm and welcoming as it’s subah was.

aasman ke paar shayad aur koyi aasmaan hogaa

baadalon ke parbaton par koyi baarish kaa makaan hogaa

main hawa ke paron pe kahaan ja raha hoon kahaan

kabhi udta hua, kabhi mudta hua, mera raasta chalaa

mere paav ke tale ki ye zameen chal rahi hai

kaheen dhoop thandi thandi , kaheen chaav jal rahi hai

is zameen ka aur koi aasamaan hoga

in lambe raaston par sab tez chalte honge

copy ke pannon jaise yahan din palatate honge

shaam ko bhi subah jaisa kya samaa hoga….
