Movie: Yahaan(2005)

Music Director: Shantanu Moitra

Singer: Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan

I will admit, being an ardent Gulzar fan, I had somehow missed the entire soundtrack of this 2005 film. Well, better late than never. This is probably the only teaming between Gulzar and Shantanu Moitra. Moitra had struck gold with Parineeta the same year and this was probably his second outing as a MD for a Hindi film. While Gulzar’s words as usual are free flowing (jhelum mein beh lenge..) and atmospheric (kangde ki aanch..), it’s the melody that evokes the feel of a lazy evening idling by a lake. Shreya Ghoshal sings each note oh-so delicately and is ably accompanied by Shaan.

A friend of mine recently said ‘in today’s Hindi film music melody has taken a backseat’. While that’s true, Shantanu Moitra is probably one of the few composers who is trying to keep it alive. His composition has wide open spaces (using Shantanu’s own way of describing his kind of music) and has plenty of room to feel, to breathe and to linger.

Pooche jo koi meri nishaani, rang hina likhna

Gore badan pe, ungli se mera naam ada likhna

Kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hai

Kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hai

Jhelum mein beh lenge,

Vaadi ke masuam bhi, ek din to badlenge

Kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hai

Kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hai

Aau to subah, jao toh mera naam saba likhna

Burf pade to burf pe mera naam dua likhna

Zara zara aag vaag pass rehti hai

Zara zara kangde ke aanch rehti hai

Kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hai

Kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hai

Raatein bujhaane , tum aagaye ho

Jab tum haste ho, din ho jaata hai

Tum gale lage toh, din so jata hai

Doli uthaye ayega din toh, pass beetha lena

Kal jo mile toh, maathe pe mere suraj ugaa dena

Zara zara aas paas dhoop rahegi

Zara zara aas pass rang rahenge

Pooche jo koi meri nishaani, rang heena likhna

Gore badan pe, ungli se mera naam ada likhna

Kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hai

Kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hai
